Les mules et mulets sont normalement stériles, bien qu’ils puissent rarement se reproduire.
Les scientifiques ont progressé dans la compréhension de ce qui se passe pendant la méiose muletière (les divisions cellulaires qui produisent les spermatozoïdes et les ovules) pour provoquer la stérilité:
